MacBook Won’t Turn On
Try these steps in order before assuming the worst. Most no-power MacBooks can be fixed.

1. Check Your Power Adapter
This sounds obvious but is the cause of many “dead” MacBooks. Try a different USB-C cable and charger, or check that your MagSafe cable is firmly seated. Look for the amber or green charging light. Try a different power outlet — wall adaptors can fail silently.
2. Perform an SMC Reset
The System Management Controller (SMC) handles power functions. A corrupted SMC can prevent your MacBook from turning on.
MacBook with Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3): Simply shut down, wait 30 seconds, then press the power button. Apple Silicon Macs reset the SMC automatically.
MacBook Pro/Air with T2 chip (2018–2020 Intel): Shut down → hold Right Shift + Left Option + Left Control for 7 seconds → keep holding and also press Power for another 7 seconds → release all → wait 5 seconds → press Power.
Older Intel MacBook (no T2): Shut down → hold Left Shift + Left Control + Left Option + Power for 10 seconds → release → press Power.
3. Reset NVRAM / PRAM
(Intel Macs only) Hold Option + Command + P + R at startup for about 20 seconds. This can clear settings that prevent a proper boot.
4. Try a Forced Restart
Hold the power button for 10 full seconds. Release and wait 5 seconds, then press once to restart.
5. Listen and Look for Signs of Life
- Do you hear the startup chime or fan spinning?
- Is the screen completely black or just dim? (Try adjusting brightness with F2)
- Any lights on the keyboard or charging indicator?
These clues help our technicians diagnose the fault quickly.
When to Bring It In
If none of the above works, the fault is likely hardware — a failed logic board, power circuit, or battery. MacExperts offers a free diagnostic and component-level repair, so you only pay if we can fix it.
