How to Turn Off Find My Before a Repair

Activation Lock prevents technicians from repairing your Mac. Disable Find My first — here’s exactly how.

Why You Need to Turn Off Find My

Apple’s Activation Lock ties your Mac to your Apple ID. When Find My is enabled, any technician who needs to replace your logic board, reinstall macOS, or restore firmware will be blocked by Activation Lock. Disabling it before your repair ensures we can complete the job without delays.

Your data is not affected by turning off Find My. It only removes the remote lock — it doesn’t wipe anything.

Option 1 — Directly on Your Mac (if it still turns on)

  1. Click the Apple menu (top left) → System Settings
  2. Click your name / Apple ID at the top
  3. Click iCloud
  4. Scroll down and click Find My Mac
  5. Toggle Find My Mac off
  6. Enter your Apple ID password when prompted

Option 2 — From iCloud.com (if your Mac won’t turn on)

  1. On another device, go to icloud.com and sign in with your Apple ID
  2. Click Find My
  3. Click All Devices at the top
  4. Select your Mac from the list
  5. Click Remove This Device
  6. Confirm with your Apple ID password

Option 3 — Sign Out of iCloud Entirely

Go to Apple menu → System Settings → [Your Name] → scroll to the bottom → click Sign Out. This removes Activation Lock completely and is the cleanest option before a major repair like a logic board replacement.
