iMac Won’t Turn On: What to Do
iMac power issues are more common than you’d think. Work through these steps first.
1. Check the Power Cable
Make sure the power cable is firmly seated at both the wall and the back of the iMac. The connector can work loose over time. Try a different wall outlet and a different power cable if you have one.
2. Listen for Signs of Life
Press the power button and listen carefully:
- Fan spinning but no display → display or backlight fault
- Startup chime but black screen → GPU or display cable issue
- Complete silence → power supply or logic board fault
- Three beeps → RAM issue (try reseating RAM on older models)
3. Check the Power Indicator Light
Older iMacs have a small LED on the back or bottom. No light at all indicates a power supply issue. A steady white light with no display points to a display fault.
4. Try an External Display
Connect a monitor via HDMI or USB-C. If you get a picture on the external display, your iMac’s internal display or its connection to the logic board has failed.
5. Perform an SMC Reset on iMac
Apple Silicon iMac (M1/M2/M3): Unplug the power cable → wait 15 seconds → plug back in → wait 5 seconds → press the power button.
Intel iMac: Shut down → unplug power for 15 seconds → plug back in → wait 5 seconds → press power.
Common iMac Hardware Faults
- Failed power supply — very common on 2009–2015 models
- Faulty GPU — especially 2011 iMac 27″ models
- Failed backlight or display panel
- Logic board failure
